The Ultimate Balancing Act: Career v. Personal Life
Balancing a thriving career in sales with a fulfilling personal life can feel like walking a tightrope. Sales roles are inherently demanding, with quotas to meet, clients to woo, and endless networking opportunities. For young professional women, finding the right balance is especially important—and often challenging. I am not going to sugar coat it for you: you are going to make personal sacrifices at the beginning of your career in order to get yourself established. Here are five tips to help you maintain that balance:
1. Set Boundaries Between Work and Personal Life
In sales, the lines between work hours and personal time can blur easily. However, protecting your personal time is vital. Establish clear work hours, and communicate them to your clients and colleagues. Resist the urge to answer work emails or take calls during personal time unless it’s truly urgent.
Use technology to enforce boundaries. For example, turn off work notifications after hours or use apps to separate work and personal communication. I have heard some salespeople say the hours of 6-9 pm are absolutely off limits as that is dinner and quality time with their kids before bed every night. Protecting your personal time allows you to recharge and be more productive during work hours.
2. Treat Your Personal Life Like a VIP Client
Imagine you are your own personal assistant. Schedule personal tasks and events just as you would for a top client. Set calendar reminders for important birthdays, with notifications a month or two weeks in advance so you can plan gifts or celebrations. Block out time for social outings, self-care, or even a quiet evening with a good book.
Creating this structure ensures your personal life doesn’t take a backseat to your professional one. When you prioritize your relationships and personal goals, you’ll feel more balanced and fulfilled.
3. Schedule Regular Check-ins With Yourself
Just as you’d follow up with a client to assess progress, take time to evaluate your work-life balance regularly. Are you consistently working overtime? Have you missed important personal milestones or feel disconnected from friends and family?
Regular self-check-ins can help you course-correct before burnout sets in. These moments of reflection are essential for maintaining a healthy perspective and ensuring your personal life is on track.
4. Treat Yo’ Self
Taking care of yourself isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days (though those are great, too). Sometimes, it’s about outsourcing tasks that eat into your personal time. Consider hiring a cleaning service to tidy your home once a month or scheduling a car wash and detailing session regularly. These small investments can save you time and mental energy, allowing you to focus on activities that bring you joy or relaxation.
Outsourcing doesn’t mean you’re failing; it’s a smart way to reclaim precious hours in your day and reduce stress. Treating yourself in this way ensures you have the bandwidth to thrive in both your personal and professional life.
5. Celebrate Wins in Both Domains
Sales professionals are often trained to celebrate career achievements—hitting quotas, landing a big client, or receiving a promotion. But don’t forget to celebrate your personal wins, too. Did you finally organize a long-overdue dinner with friends? Finish that book you’ve been meaning to read? These moments matter just as much as professional milestones.
Acknowledging your successes—both big and small—helps reinforce the value of maintaining a balanced life. It’s a reminder that you’re more than your job title.
